A Study on Collegiate Nursing Education in Korea


Abstract
The data of this study was obtaind from 431 nursing students in Seoul district attending the Departments of Nursing,Ewha Womans University(Dept. of Clinical Nursing,fist, second, third, fourth yer 100: D ept.of Public Health Nursing ,first, second ter 81)Seoul Nation,fourth yer 75), and Catholic Medical College (fist, second, third, fourthyer 100) from May 1970 to October 1970.
The purpose of this study was to investigat the students¢¥ responses to curren curriculum. It is hoped that information will contribute to better curriculum planning in the collegiat nursing education porgrams in Korea,
The results obtained wer as follows:
1. Majority of the students (77.2%) recongnized that the curriculum reformation was necessary. Only a small percentage of the students (22.8%) thought that curriculum revision at present was not necessary.
2. The most important reason (54.2%) for curriculum reformation was to improve nursing education. The other reasons were to develop curruculum planning and its administration (14.7%), to improve general education (12.2%) and to provide more time for the extracurricular activities (4.0%).
3. Among the students who thought that the curriculum revision was necessary,desire to bring emphasis on general education was most common (46.1%), emphasis on nursing to education was the second(28.8%), and emphasis both on general education aswell as nursing education (25.1%) was the third,in order.
4. The significant reasons for improving the general education were to raise the standard of general education,to educat cultured nures,to improve general education as a basis of character-formation, to develop skills in human relationships, to improve the psycholgical aspects of education,to develop leadership.etc.
It is interesting to note that the students believed that the general education was as important as nursing major.
5. The two highest number of reasons for improving nursing education were,to raise a standard of unrsing education and to develop an academic independency. Another resons were to improve the quality of nursing education,to bring about effective practices after greaduation to undertand human physiology,to imperove nursing practice, to develop leaderships to raise the general image of nursing.
6. Majority of the students in fist and seocond year felt that the amount of learning as well as the content of Korean language,English education, general psychology, religion were adequate. But many sophomore complained that the cintent of English was not actually helpful.
7. A lage number of students expressed that they felt the amount of learning,class hour arrangement,and content of physics and chemistry were proper.However,the subject content of these courses many students felt was not helpful.
8. Many students in junior and senior years felt that the content of physiology, microbiology,and pathology was rather difficult,though was helpful, and the amount of learuing required was rether heavy. A small group qas not satisfactory.
9. A large nnmber of students in this study belived that the amount of learning,class hour arrangement,and content of fundamental nursing,medical and surgical nursing,maternity and child nursing, psychiatic nursing, and public health nursing was satisfactory, and helpful. But some students in the sophomore year felt that the class hour arrangement of fundamental nursing practice was not satisfactory.
10. A majority of students among the third and fourth yer thought that the class hour arrangement of clinical nursung as well as publichealth nursing practices was net satisfactory.
11. Many students in sophomore, junior and senior hear felt the class hour arrangement of nursing ethics and history of nursing was proper,the content of these two subjects was rather easy,and the amount of require leanning was small.
